There is no story more emblematic of the urban decay of the once great city of Detroit than this one - Frozen in Indifference. Be warned, the photograph for this article is very disturbing. Detroit, a city that used to have a population approaching 2 million but now barely 900,000, has been in a long and depressing state of decline for decades. Now the city's hopelessness is even darker with the near collapse of the American auto industry.
But this article is beyond belief even for Detroit. A body was discovered at the bottom of a frozen elevator shaft with only his legs sticking out of the ice. What's worse, many people knew about the body but did nothing, including a group of "Urban Explorers" who explore the ruins of Detroit, the pinnacle of American Haikyo. Even more disturbing was that it took three calls to 911 and 24 hours before authorities finally showed up to remove the body.
It is hard to not think that this American city is far beyond ever saving.
